The principle of paint strippers is penetration of the paint film by the molecules of the active ingredient, causing its swelling; this volume increase causes internal strains, which, together with the weakening of the layer’s adhesion to the underlying surface, leads to separation of the layer of the paint from the substrate.
CIPS has specialized paint stripping tools and techniques to provide paint removal adding value to your commercial paint job.
There are 2 main reasons for paint stripping or abrasive blasting:
Soda blasting is a blasting method to remove paint, oil and other contaminants from hard to clean surfaces. Although soda blasting is similar to sandblasting, in that the blast media (in this case sodium bicarbonate or baking soda) is delivered via compressed air, soda blasting has many advantages over sandblasting.
Sand is a hard and dense blasting material. It leaves glass and metal pitted and can tear rubber, plastic and other soft surfaces. Sodium bicarbonate, on the other hand, is a friable material. That means when it hits the surface being cleaned, instead of powering straight through the outer layer to the substrate beneath and damaging that, the soda crystals shatter, delivering its cleaning energy across a wider surface without penetrating the underlying structure. It’s even gentle enough to clean fibreglass and wood surfaces, and there’s no need to re-profile steel after soda blasting.
Because soda blast media is water soluble it’s easier to remove leaving no residue. That makes it ideal for stripping paint of walls, degreasing engines, and cleaning in public places. Because the soda is washed away and not recycled and reused, it contains no contaminants, so you’re not inadvertently introducing grease and grime to your blasted surface. And because the soda crystals coat oil and grease causing them to slide off the surface rather than dissolving them, there is no need to pre-clean the surface.
In non-hazardous applications, the residue can be filtered and flushed into drains where, unlike many cleaning materials, it actually benefits the sewers by neutralizing other chemicals. Solid waste finding its way into landfill sites is reduced to around 5 percent of sandblasting and other blasting media.
Where some blasting media will clog surfaces making it harder to detect cracks, and if not properly rinsed after cleaning can cause engine damage, bicarbonate of soda, because it’s an alkali, prevents ferrous metals oxidising and rusting, and cleans into cracks, making them more visible.
Although soda blasting is an environmentally friendly process, the soda blasting system includes high pressure containers. As such, it’s always better to hire a professional who will be able to arrange any permits required for waste removal and who knows how to handle the equipment.
Commercial Industrial Painting Services can remove mould and mildew, paint and powder coatings, bitumen, glue, varnish, lacquers, fats, oil, grease and even baked on carbon from boats and cars, planes and trains, glass, most metal surfaces including chrome and copper, fibreglass and even timber.
